Frequently Asked Questions
What's
the difference between FXS and FXO?
These terms originated
in traditional telephony, wherein equipment is divided
into two major classes: Office and Station.
In the public telephone
system, telephone lines radiate from the public telephone
exchange or "Central Office," to "stations"
i.e. subscriber telephones.
The office supplies operating
voltage, dial tone and ring signals to the station (telephone)
while the station sends off-hook indication and dialing
signals to the office.
The S in FXS stands
for Station. An FXS gateway provides analog ports
for connection to station equipment such as telephones,
fax machines, or the trunk side of a PBX.

The O in FXO stands
for Office. An FXO gateway provides analog ports
for connection to Office equipment, such as lines from
the Public telco system or the line side of a switchboard
(PBX).

What
is a PBX or KSU?
These
are types of office phone systems.
The
PBX or Private Branch Exchange is like a miniature
version of a telephone company Central Office (a.k.a.
exchange) in that it dynamically connects a number of
outside telco trunk lines to a (usually higher) number
of internal lines (extensions).
KSU stands
for Key Service Unit. Similar in function to
a PBX, the KSU is an older technology easily recognized
by the dedicated push-buttons for each incoming line
on each telephone, and the associated large multi-conductor
cabling to each telephone set.
How
does an IP phone save me money?
Currently
your calls are routed through your local telephone company
where you are charged a rate based on the destination
of the call. By routing your call through the internet
there are no costs per minute only the upfront hardware
charges.
Bypassing
telephone company toll charges seems illegal, is it?
No, not
at all. Some telephone companies are using IP Telephony
as part of the backbone to their services, meaning they
are saving themselves money and still charging you the
same amount in long distance.
Will
I have to get permission from my phone company to add
your equipment to our PBX?
In most
cases business purchase their telephone equipment outright
